Chrome plating is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. A chrome plated part is called chrome, or is said to have been chromed. The chromium layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, facilitate cleaning, or increase surface hardness.
Primarily, a chrome plating gives stainless steel added durability to withstand regular wear and tear, which can be a problem for some variations. A low coefficient for friction increases abrasion resistance, as well. Chrome plating on steel also adds a distinctive, shiny look that some people appreciate.
